The city's name was first recorded in 1823, when Captain Jose Romero's expedition, which was attempting to discover a road through San Gorgonio Pass to Tucson, passed by Indian Wells.

The town's position was then near the north side of Highway 111, east of Miles Avenue, west of Point Happy. W.P. Blade, a Smithsonian geologist who visited the community in 1853, referred to it as an active Indian settlement.
